Dawson was enamoured with all creatures great and small. It is why her creations, to date, include horses, cats, cheetahs, ewes and a ram called ‘fatso’. Animals, like dancers (Dawson’s other passion), imply movement. Central to her work is the idea of [moments] about a point…There’s a tension, a story implying something exciting is about to happen or has happened.’
Indeed, the three giraffes staring over their shoulders at us, as we perch on a sofa upstairs at the Barry Stern gallery in Paddington, do seem alive…‘Look how the light accentuates their forms,’ she says. ‘If the form is working properly you can harness the light and give a sense of life and energy…’
